The group gathers for the ceremonial cutting of the first sod

Today, 5 July 2010, we began the second season at Bective Abbey. We are full of expectations for the excavation. The large team cleared the sods in two 5m x 5m cuttings at a rate never seen before. By the end of the day it is possible that we already have another post pad belonging to the large wooden structure (infirmary?). Medieval pottery, post-medieval, a tile fragment, iron knives, roof slates and nails are part of our first day’s finds. Things are looking good for tomorrow.
